About

Sylvester Space is Sheffield’s newest independent exhibition facility housed in a former disused cutlery works within the city’s Cultural Industry Quarter.

Sylvester Space provides approximately 3,000 sq ft of unique display space available to hire to any individual or organisation requiring a flexible exhibition facility for public or private use without curatorial input.

The Space

The building comprises a large open display area measuring approximately 10m x 25m, which has a high roof truss/eaves height. There is also a small ancillary room which may be used as a video booth, additional display room, office or store.

Public access to Sylvester Space during exhibitions is through large service doors onto Sylvester Street.  There is a moveable screen which can be used to provide a small internal foyer area in front of the service doors.  These doors also provide a loading entrance large enough for vehicles, including light vans. 

At other times, Sylvester Space is accessed via a small personnel door from Sylvester St.  This access is shared with neighbouring Bloc studios, who also share the toilet facilities.  Once inside, a separate doorway then provides secure access into Sylvester Space.

There is a fire exit at the rear of the building.

Two of the internal walls are finished in white plaster board walling, whilst the other two are white painted block or brick. The floor is painted concrete.

Hirers may introduce their own display mountings/structures etc provided that Sylvester Space is left in a clean and tidy condition, that all display items etc are removed and that all marks, fixings etc are removed and surfaces made good.

Uses

Sylvester Space may be used for exhibitions, displays and similar.  It may not be used for other commercial purposes or events.  No music or public performance is permitted unless the hirer has the appropriate permissions/licenses and prior permission is obtained from the Landlord.  Whilst it is permissible to have private receptions in connection with an exhibition or display where alcohol or food is provided, alcohol and food may not be sold.

Health & Safety

Sylvester Space complies with health and safety requirements and also has fire fighting equipment.

Power & Lighting

Sylvester Space has basic “house” lighting, there are sockets at skirting level and on each roof truss which enable exhibitors additional lighting to be provided, however alterations to the wiring within Sylvester Space are not permitted.

Heating

Heating, if required, is provided by overhead ambient gas heaters.

Security

When hiring Sylvester Space keys for each of the three doors will be provided in triplicate for up to three nominated key holders. Sylvester Space has a Redcare alarm system, full details of which will be provided when hirers receive their keys.  Hirers of the building are responsible for the security and safe keeping of the building during a period of hire.

Insurance

Building owners public liability insurance is in place.  However, the hirer is responsible for insuring everything they introduce into the building (equipment, exhibits etc) and must also obtain appropriate public liability insurance.

Legal Agreement

Persons or Organisations using Sylvester Space will be required to enter into a Licence Agreement with the owners of the building. This is a formal legal document which will clearly set out all the terms and conditions for the use of Sylvester Space. A copy of this Licence is available on request.

Charges and Payment

Sylvester Space is currently available at £600 per week or part thereof. This charge includes reasonable use of lighting power and heating, any excessive use of utilities will be charged as extra. When booking Sylvester Space a non returnable deposit will be required. All charges are subject to VAT at 17.5%.
